I love Echinacea purpurea. And the oldfashioned ones even smell good, though not as strongly as phlox. I also like reblooming daylilies. In addition to Stella d'Oro there is Purple d'Oro, Going Bananas, and several others. Some of them smell good too.

Monarda, lamb's ears for the foliage, daylilies, columbine sometimes reseeds and pops up here and there in surprising places. Reseeding annuals can seem like perennials but if you mulch sometimes you lose them. Old fashioned bleeding heart early and then it dies back and disappears and comes up the next spring.

Depending on your desires, there are short and tall canna lilies, with many different colors.

Peonies and clematis flowers complement roses pretty well also.

And finally, one more that I like but you have to be cautious about its invasiveness, which may or may not be a problem on your property, is the passion flower plant.
