Mike, are you in zone 5, and waiting on volunteer plants to come up? If I did that here (zone 7a) my tomatoes would be late also. You can buy plants locally or start your own seeds ( I do both). I might buy some plants and plant them in a spot without a lot of horse poop, but well amended. I would also plant some plants with a shorter DTM.

Mike, Are you raising them from seed sown directly in the ground? If so, that's the problem.

Here in OK, we put tomato transplants in the ground in early April or sometimes in March if we are having abnormally warm
weather. If we put 6 to 8 week old transplants into the ground in April, they'll be blooming and setting fruit within a couple of weeks and we'll be harvesting the first fruit from those plants sometimes as early as late May but definitely in June. Since the weather here gets hot enough in June or July to impede fruit set, we wouldn't get many if any tomatoes until fall if we didn't start out with transplants put into the ground as soon as all danger of freezing weather has passed.

Since you're in zone 5, you'd have to plant later than us and that makes using transplants even more important in your case.
