When I pot up seedlings, which is on my 'To Do' list for the rest of today now that the wind, chilly temperatures and rain (miniscule pitiful amount that it is) has driven me indoors, I try to respect how each type of plant grows when I am potting up and, therefore, act accordingly. For something like tomatoes that will indeed form new roots along the stem, I pot them up deeply all the way to just below the first true leaves. For something that grows more from a crown, like lettuce or cabbage, I normally don't plant the seedlings much deeper than they already are in the original flat where I started the seeds.

Some plant seedlings love being planted more deeply, some don't seem to care for it, and others seem to grow on equally well no matter how you choose to do it. If you want to use this a learning experience, plant 50% at more or less the same depth they are in the starter flat, and plant 50% of them deeper. (You could stick a toothpick in all the ones planted more deeply to help you remember a few weeks from now which is which.) Then, keep track of how they grow under each condition, and you'll know how to handle those specific types of plants in the future.

In some cases, it won't matter either way, but the only way you'll know for sure is to try it both ways and see if it matters.

Everything I do in/with the garden is part of an ongoing experiment to see what works best....and what does work best one year is not necessarily what will work best the next year. It keeps life (and gardening) interesting.

Thanks Dawn. Since I planted triple what I want I will do that. I enjoy experimenting as long as I still get some produce.
I also got that dash of rain today, and its pretty cold here so I am also housebound.
