Yes Bre. You plant the kernel. I assume you would like to grow corn for corn on the cob? That's what most people want.

You should be able to plant any time now. But I will let someone else make a variety recommendation. Years ago I grew Silver Queen and it was very nice. But in recent decades I have only grown non-sweet varieties for making corn meal. There are some excellent sweet corn varieties out there. I bet someone will drop in real soon and recommend a couple.

Do not buy transplants. That's a very expensive way to go and seeds will sprout very quickly. You'll get a lot more for your money from seed.

Thanks George! Yes I would like it for eating..canning, whatever I can do with it. And I would assume the deer and coons and what not would like it for eating too-lol.

I have never seen a corn transplant, and figured it was as simple as stick a kernel in the ground, but hey, ya never know and I am learning!

I haven't grown corn, but I think I've read you need at least a 10 foot by 10 foot square for good pollination - which is why I haven't grown corn. My whole garden is only 15 x 15.

I've successfully grown in in three to four rows. Here's a picture of Mesquakie Indian corn, which I grew very close together in 2006. The entire patch was only about 5' wide and perhaps 10' long.

There are way too many varities of corn to try and reccommend one.

Personally i grow merrit. it seems to be easier to de-silk when preparring to clean.

An old time favorite around here is kandy korn. usually smaller ears but really sweet.

lots of the road side peddlers sell G90 . They are usually bigger ears then the other ones i listed.

You'll just have to read up on them and decide for yourself if they are the ones for you.
