Early spring garden photos

I was out working in the garden this morning and thought I would share a photo. What a beautiful morning! Most of my fledgling crop has survived the recent frosts. So far I've got onions & potatoes going gangbusters, tomato, eggplant and peppers in the ground, plus radishes, several varieties of lettuce, cabbage, beats, carrots and a nice little basil plant. Peas and cucumbers are finally coming up and I'm about to plant beans and a few varieties of squash in the long bed, not pictured.

Hope this spring turns out as nice and long as last year!

James, your garden looks very nice. I did not come out so lucky.

I would like to post a picture of a mistake I made yesterday. I have been covering my Potatoes with hay to protect them from frost. I would move the hay back during the day to sorta create wind break, and also to try to reflect some of the sun's energy back into the plant.

I forgot to cover my plants last night and I think I made a bad micro climate even worst by having the hay there to create pocket for the cold air to collect in. Notice that the row on the right has more damage than the row on the left. The damage is worse where there is deeper hay piled up on both sides, and less where there could be more air movement.

I hope others can see what I did, or did not do and maybe not have the damage I did.

Larry, that is interesting, how the damage is different given the hay bank height. I bet they will bounce back quickly though. Wind is an issue for me as well as the cold so I covered with hay then a row cover on top of that. I can't expect hay to stay where I put it.

Betty, that does seem strange, I have never had anything like that happen before. Another thing I have noticed is my onions leaning south. I dont know if they are leaning toward the sun of if it is because of the terrible wind we have had all winter and spring, which has been most often from the north. We most often have wind from the south (I live in a valley that runs north/south). Have you noticed any difference in the wind this year?

I expect my potatoes to recover, but I do have them covered tonight. The TV is saying record low for the night (per wife). Dawn, my wife, and Lee are my weather people because I cant hear well enough to get much from the TV. -------- My wife just said "down to freezing", if that is so I can expect down into the 20's here.
