I have two that were planted by the builder when I moved into my house in 2009. I would not recommend them either. They are beautiful trees but they just don't do well here it seems. Mine are still alive but struggling, and one is part dead but there are still a few green branches left. They got borers a couple of years ago, which I have heard tends to happen when trees are stressed and not doing well. The first fall, a few weeks after they were planted, they had the most glorious fall color, but ever since the color has been lackluster at best. In fact, most summers the leaves start turning brown and by the time fall comes they have already lost half their leaves. It makes me sad because I love maples, but I am going to replace them with something else this fall.

Have you looked at Chinese Pistache trees? They are supposed to have fall color. It is also an Oklahoma Proven tree.
