That sounds like a lot of garlic Dorothy. I like garlic, but not enough to eat a garlic sandwich!

We usually clean the individual cloves, many or few, place them in zip-lock baggies and freeze them. We canâÂÂt tell that it makes any difference in the flavor and it is much more convenient.

I'm intrigued by the fact that you planted the garlic under the fruit trees. My husband wants to plant garlic this year (it's a crop to plant in the fall, correct?)...under the fruit trees might be a great place! I assume the fruit trees aren't harmed at all? We weren't very good this winter about watering the fruit trees (and by not very good I mean that the trees maybe didn't get watered at all). Maybe having the garlic there will be enough to remind us to show those trees a little love in the off season.
We bought lots of green garlic at the farmer's market Saturday, and have enjoyed it with every meal this week. I might actually be able to enjoy a garlic sandwich!

We planted the garlic there because it is supposed to deter pests, especially fruit tree borers. He dug most of it out because it was getting so crowded that he felt it was competing for water during the summer. We water fruit trees only in a very dry winter and this winter hasn't been.

Paul, I may start freezing more in the fall as well, as by this time of the year I am always throwing shriveled up garlic, both elephant and regular, out into the woods--where in a wet spring it takes hold and grows.
