Put an old board over them? I have junk like that around here; you may not. Plant them and take a chance or wrap them in damp paper towel to plant soon giving them a little head start since you feel like you are late.

I have used boards just like Helen suggested, and also cardboard over a planted seedbed, with 2 x 4 lumber or bricks holding down the edges of the cardboard so it won't blow away in the storm. I've also planted seed and left the soil naked and just hoped the seed wouldn't wash away (and most of it did not) and have planted seed and scattered light mulch of grass clippings or chopped/shredded leaves over the seedbed.

In a smallish area, I've even placed upside-down flower pots over a row of seeds, which protected most of the seedlings. Clay pots work better for this than plastic ones because clay pots are less likely to blow away. If the wind is blowing strong enough to carry away clay pots, then your biggest worry won't be your garden at a time like that anyhow.

I've also covered a large area seeded with corn seed with a standard blue tarp with the edges held down by clay pots, 2 x 4 lumber scraps and bricks or large rocks. Just be sure that you remove the covering every day to check for seeds sprouting underneath, or completely remove it after the worst weather has passed. Any covering like boards or tarps that stay on the beds too long can hold in the moisture too much and prevent the soil from drying out and cause the seeds to rot. I usually remove the tarp or boards as soon as the threatening weather has passed.

I like to plant in a trench in the ground so I can easily water the seeds late in the year, if I am expecting rain I reverse the process and plant on a small ridge. I then place trash bags along the side and weight them down with rocks. If it looks like rain I pull the trash bag across the ridge and weight the other side down with rocks also. By doing it this way the erosion will be between the rows. You wont want to leave the area covered too long. You can still use the trash bags after they are used in the garden.
