Broccoli, cold weather and insects

.The cold weather badly damaged the cabbage and broccoli in the south garden ( I pulled the plants). The heads are smaller than normal in the north garden. The cold weather damaged these plants also, but they were not mulched and I think the heat from the ground helped save these plants, but it did not keep the insects from wanting to eat them. I have harvested 8 heads. The first 3 were a little larger than these but were still sub-par.

mine will probably get pulled this weekend. the look good but the heads are not much bigger than a golf ball.

Oh well Ill try again this fall.

I was mostly happy with my broccoli this year. This is the second year to plant it. I had a couple of plants that formed about 8 or 9 tiny heads instead of one central large head. What causes that?

My red cabbage needs to hurry up and get a bigger head before it gets to hot.

OSUEngineer, I have not grown broccoli many times, but I have grown 2 kinds that I like better than the others, I think they were called Sprouting Broccoli. I don't remember the exact name, but I liked those better, they made a lot of side shoots with thick stems. DW did not like them so I did not grow any this year. I plan on leaving the plants in the ground and harvesting the side shoots.

Next year I plan on having some sprouting broccoli even if it requires a " His and Hers" garden.
