Larry, that sure looks like a lacewing to me. Thats a good thing! The larvae will feed on your aphids.

Since you started an insect thread I hope you dont mind if I add mine. I dont want to clutter the board if we can help it.

I found this on my peach tree. I have no idea what it is. its pretty nasty looking. anyone know?

Mike, I am happy you added to the thread.

I thought my insect was a lace wing, but I have my youngest granddaughter is here helping me today and the things I tell her I want to be correct. I also showed her your insect. We decided it looked mean enough to be a rattlesnake killer.

I think that mean looking one may another predator like the wheelbug.

Larry, What a lovely green lacewing you have there. I love green lacewings and think it would be hard to garden organically without them because they are voracious eaters of pest insects.

Mark, It is one of the assassin bugs, as Helen said, and is related to the wheelbug. Almost all assassin bugs are good as they prey upon pest insects. There's about 150 known kinds of assassin bugs in North America, and the only one I can think of that is bad (from a human point of view) is the kissing bug, aka the cone-nosed assassin bug, because those do bite people. Some assassin bugs, and in particular the wheelbug, will bite a human if that human gets too close to it, but they are only doing that as self-defense. Wheelbug bites can be very painful---similar to a scorpion bite.
