Stay from fast growing trees (ie. silver maples, bradford pears). Ice storms and wind storms are not kind to them.

Chinese Pitasche is supposed to be a great tree for Oklahoma.

I would think you will need to get someone to grind out that tree stump....or plant vines over it and make it pretty :)

Depending on the size of tree you want, crepe myrtle trees are beautiful in the summer when little else is pretty!

Don't plant something that will be really tall, if it is a one story. It will over power the house, and make it look really small.

and, yes, like Lisa says, don't get something that is supposed to grow fast. Most of those, are not sturdy trees.

The linked website from the Oklahoma Forestry Service has ltree selection guides listed and linked, with lots of tree descriptions on those publications to help homeowners choose trees for their landscapes.

Be really careful to avoid choosing trees known to be brittle and to break easily. Your part of OK is far enough north that ice storms occur fairly regularly and they tend to bring down a lot of trees.

You're never too old to plant a tree and imagine yourself someday sitting beneath its shade. My "old farmer" friend, Fred, plants new fruit trees every year, it seems like, and has been for the entire 15 years we've lived here and known him.....and he is turning 91 years young in a few months. He now can sit in the shade of trees he planted when we moved here in 1999. He always tells me that even if he never harvests fruit from those trees, somebody will. I'm kinda betting he'll be harvesting the fruit himself one day from the trees he planted this year, and I think one day you'll be sitting in the shade of the tree you plant this year.
