Yeah, those are good looking onions!

Mike, that is very nice. This is my third year to try to grow bulbing onions. I have had a good harvest, but I believe yours are larger than mine. I have harvested at least 150 and should have at least that many left. I just harvest them as they fall over. My real surprise is a type (something) Valencia. I cant read the tag and I don't know how they will taste, but they were started from seed this year. This is something I want to try again.

Thanks for the nice comments. I was shocked at how some are softball size and then one right next to it would be golf ball size. would that be because they fought for water and nutrients. We only did about 100 plants but after this year I bet we do more next year.

Yeah, onions are heavy feeders.

Just as an experiment, dig one up, very carefully, and see just how deep the roots grow...

I leave them in the ground for as long as possible, until the necks are completely floppy or when the stalks begin to dry out.

I also crease the last few inches of the tips of the 'leaves' and emerging scapes over and crease them so they don't go to seed. Make 'em spend their energy on bulbs.
