Maybe gooseberries? My grandparents used to have them but it's been years since I saw them so not sure.

I agree with Dorothy that it is something in the Ribes family, maybe clove currant (Ribes odoratum). That is what the foliage most resembles to me, but I've never seen an actual gooseberry bush, so I am not disagreeing with Dorothy....just saying that they look to me like clove currant, which is in the same family as gooseberry. Honestly, I think it could be either gooseberry or clove currant based on the shape of the leaves.

So, it never has flowered yet? The flower color would be a good clue. If it were clove currant, the flowers would be yellow and would have a spicy clove-like aroma while in bloom in spring. Maybe Dorothy can tell you what color flowers you'll see (eventually) if it is a gooseberry.

I have gooseberry plants and they have a cluster of tiny white flowers. Mine have already bloomed for the year. But mine are more bush like instead of a single stalk.

These have never bloomed or formed buds. They have the original stalk but small shoots have come out at the ground level so it's trying to bush out.

Also, the leaves are shiney and smooth, almost have a waxy feel.
