My daughter uses vinegar and salt and seems to be happy with it. I use glyphosate and am happy with it. I don't know the ratio my daughter uses, but she got it off the net.

It won't sterilize the soil, but there is a risk in using too much salt too often during times of low rainfall because the salts can accumulate and can harm plants you didn't intend to kill. When you are receiving regular, heavier rainfall, the salts will leach away each time it rains. If you're near a lake or creek, that's not necessary a good thing because the salt could be leaching into the body of water.

Also, salt and vinegar are non-selective weedkillers and will kill anything they make contact with if they are used in a strong enough formulation, so be sure you don't use them near anything you don't want to kill. When I was a kid, lots of people used salt poured into sidewalk cracks or into the land between flagstones to keep weeds and grass from growing in those areas.
