I grew potatoes! Now what?

I've always wanted to grow potatoes, so this year I decided to give it a go. I found a huge bag of regular ones, or a small package of purple ones. So I went with the purple ones. I've harvested a few here and there, and today I decided to pull the rest since the plants looked pretty well dead. There were 3 or 4 edible ones, and half a dozen teeny tiny ones or ones that feel mushy. Not too bad, just like older potatoes.. Can I replant the little ones? And if so, should I wait until later this fall, or plant them now? If I should wait, how should I save them?

There's no right or wrong way to use the small potatoes for seed potatoes. Either way works. You can leave the little ones in the ground now as long as it is not excessively moist. Once the soil temps cool enough, they'll sprout on their own as long as insects or excessive moisture haven't destroyed them.

Or, you can store them in a cool, dry place like your pantry, basement or storm shelterand plant them in August for fall potatoes.

I'm a little concerned about the description of them as mushy. They may have too high of a water content and may rot. The ones I either just leave in the ground or replant would not be decribed as mushy. They are just as firm as the big potatoes. I toss anything mushy on the compost pile the same day I dig them.

Ok, thanks. I have a squirrel that ate several of them, so leaving them in ground may not be a good idea. Guess I'll be finding a place to store them.
