Grasshoppers ?

Thank you for replying! I haven't noticed a lot of grasshoppers but what would the black things be from? droppings? Is this how grasshoppers kill plants? I guess I'm confused.

I agree with Kim that grasshoppers seem to be the likely culprits. Those little black pellets look like grasshopper frass, although they could be frass from some other pest as well. The leaves in the photo look chewed up, and grasshoppers do that as well (as do many other pests). If any pest of any kind eats too much of the foliage off of a plant, it can damage the plant (with no leaves, photosynthesis ceases and then there's nothing producing energy to sustain the plant), but with shrubs the grasshoppers usually do not do enough damage to kill the plant unless they start stripping the bark off the trunk and girdle it. Most plants, other than annual flowers, veggies or herbs, bounce back just fine from grasshopper damage. Annuals may or may not bounce back depending on how large they are, how strong they are and how vigorously they are or aren't growing at the time the grasshoppers start devouring them. Perennial plants, with larger and more deeply developed root systems, usually can regrow fast enough to outgrow grasshopper damage or to at least recover from it.

It looked just like my bean patch chewed with frass.
