I am planting leaf lettuce now. I am eating the lettuce I planted early August but I need some new plants for later.

I'll tell you what we do with our asparagus in the fall. Nothing. We leave the tops there to freeze back naturally and offer some protection for the crowns. Then early next spring before the new spears emerge--sometimes in a warm March, always by April--we cut the tops and burn them in case there is any disease issues. Then we will spread some more mulch--wood chips the last few years, but shredded leaves from now on, and wait for the new spears. Depending on where you are and whether you can offer some protection, you can still plant lettuce, spinach, kale, mustard, arugula, radishes. I usually plant all those in early Sept, but this year it's so dry and my garden still overrun with grasshoppers that all I've planted are two 4x4 frames with screenwire over the top. My lettuce is just now big enough to eat and spinach and beets are growing.

Garlic, onion, hopefully some broccoli but prob too late for that.

I fired the compost pile back up.

I'm trimming Poplar tree saplings that I couldnt' get to in spring. I'm hoping to make some wattle fence for raised beds.

mostly I'm preparing beds for spring. Next week I'll be filling up about 30 plastic jugs readying that soil for winter sowing.

i got real lucky. I prepared a couple beds and topped them with alfalfa. Then it rained yesterday. Perfect. Tonight fertilizing with worm tea.
