Anyone interested in Open Pollinated or Heirloom variety's of vegetables should read National Geographic Magazine's 2011 article titled Food Ark. It can be found on the web. I read it a couple of years ago and thought it very interesting and informative. It also made me think about the garden crops that we raise. According to the article open pollinated and heirloom seeds carry genes that help them adapt to changing climate and soil conditions and some have the genes necessary to help incase there were to be some catastrophic disease that might affect the worlds hybrid seed crops that civilizations depend on. It described how OP & Heirloom plants have the ability to adapt to climate & soil conditions which Hybrids don't have. I believe it was right about these type of plants.
