You might offer it on Craigslist or Freecycle. People will come dig it up for you.

I doubt the carpet would work. Heavy, thick black plastic might if you use either a 6 mm thickness or two layers of a 3 or 4 mm thickness. However, I'm not even sure that plastic will smother it out over the course of the winter. With carpet, you're more likely to have the monkey grass grow up right through the carpet in spring.

I think there's a good chance that a Craigslist ad like Mia suggested would be one way to get rid of it. There's no guarantee though. Otherwise, you'll have to dig it up to get rid of it, and be prepared to have some of it come back in spring and need to be dug out again. It is very persistent and hard to get rid of once you have it.

Our HOA is hosting a fall plant swap so I've put a list of my less-loved plants out for "you bring the shovel" treatment and someone is coming for our monkey grass. So I know it works! Wish me luck with my hollies.

Mia, Good luck getting rid of the hollies. If they're the size of our hollies, it will take large excavation equipment and a front-end loader to dig them out and haul them off.

I had better luck at cutting the holly off at the bottom, and then digging out the roots. No one really likes to come and get one.

Moni, I cannot imagine anyone would try to move them if the hollies are more than a couple of years old, but you never know.

I planted hollies because I wanted them, and chose the variety and site carefully so they wouldn't outgrow the space, but often when you buy a house, you'll find stuff planted in the wrong place and it is so much work to get rid of it. In a lot of ways it is easier to begin with a clean slate than to have to remove 'mistakes' planted by other people.
