Is it a great day, or what?

I can hardly watch the news, but in my corner of the world the sun is shining, it is a beautiful day, and I received my certificate for the Geoff Lawton Permaculture Design Course. I kind of skipped the gardening season since I was away from home at least half of the summer and then spent every free minute I could find at home to work on this certification. It has been a great learning experience and I will never look at land the same way again. I feel very blessed to have been able to take the course from Geoff. The course was hours and hours of instruction on-line from Geoff and the text book was Bill Mollison's 'Permaculture - A Designer's Manual', a 574 page book. At times it was like getting a drink out of a fire hose, but I just kept watching until I knew I understood.

Carol, I am glad to see you on the forum. Congratulations on the certification, and, yes it is a beautiful day. I will have to change my style of gardening some also because my body is telling me that I am not young any more.

I think once I read about, studied and even implemented some permaculture, it permanently changed me. I always gravitate right back to it.

Thanks. I pop in now and then, but when I was at home I stayed very busy. I think I started the course in May and finished the last week of September, so it just kind of sucked up my summer. We have spent a lot of time at our son's place this summer, and then I worked on the course when I was home, so I have been very busy. The certification is nice, but I took it for the knowledge, not a new career. LOL

New plans.....well, everything. LOL

I had to submit a design in order to pass the course, and I did my son and DIL's place. It will take several years to implement it, but we started this summer. Hopefully we can get the mainframe stuff done next year, but it is a long term plan.

Shorter term, I plan to re-do my own garden this winter. Since it is just outside my backdoor, and not that large, I can do it gradually over the winter and have it ready to plant.

Every time I "plan" for my 1/16th of an acre I become stunted by the need for a back hoe. We juuuust might know someone... Hubs can operate quite well. But I would seriously love to get some grading done and some french drains installed.

Gollies.. we'd have all the water we need except for seasonal droughts equivalent to 2011. Even then, the open tanks could be rationed out and hugelkulture is a nice trick that worked for me on a small scale.

Stuff works. I was impressed with what Geoff did in the desert! I notice the larger (more realistic) scale permaculture requires a serious community effort.
