The rotten sweet potato in your photo with the small worm or maggots on it could be Wire worms. I can't remember where I read about them but they were having problems with them in Louisiana, (I think!) it may have to do with the wet soil conditions after the hurricanes down there. Just a guess as you complained about your wet soil. But then again it could just be some kind of maggot because of the potato being rotten. I planted turnips in a little potting soil spread down the row in my garden, I thought it would help hold the moisture, this was back last winter when it was so very dry here. When I pulled the turnips later this spring a couple of them had what looked to be termites burrowed in holes in the turnip. They must have been there for the potting soil.
