I will sure be interested in any replies to this question. I thought that Kiwi is absolutely tropical and a somewhat distant cousin to figs.

RE: kiwi

There are cold-hardy kiwis that are hardy down to zone 5 I believe.

The issue here in the hot part of the country is not cold-hardiness because they can easily tolerate our winter temperatures. The issue is that kiwi plants absolutely need moist soil all the time in order to grow and thrive and produce, and if you let the soil get too dry in summer, they tend to die very easily so very close attention to soil moisture levels is absolutely essential. I know quite a few people who currently grow them in Texas or Oklahoma or who have tried to grow them in the past. Of the folks that I've talked to or who have posted online about their experiences, some have managed to keep the plants alive, some have not, and few ever get any fruit. When choosing a variety or two to plant, it is important to make sure you get one with the right number of chilling hours for Oklahoma.

If you want to grow them for their beautiful foliage, that's pretty easy. Getting them to bear fruit is a different issue altogether. Most kiwis are male or female and you have to have both, obviously, to get fruit. Some people have found they get the best pollination with three different varieties instead of two. There are some self-fruitful varieties available but they produce better if another variety is planted nearby. I believe the one more people are successful with in our climate is 'Issai', and I am not sure if I spelled that correctly.

Didn't Tulsa_Brian or someone on this forum plant Kiwi last year or the year before?

If I was going to try to plant cold-hardy Kiwi here, I'd probably try to buy my plants from a very reputable edible fruit plant company like One Green World or someone similar because they offer the best choice of varieties.

I'm going to go and link the website for One Green World, but will warn y'all in advance that visiting their website will inspire you and make you want to plant all different kinds of fruiting plants all over your property.

Thanks dawn - One green world has quite a selection and I was wondering which to order - my pawpaws came from there. I'll give them a call and get their recommendation.

RE: kiwi

You're welcome.

If you talk to them, I hope you'll come back and tell us what they recommend for Oklahoma, so we can file it away in our minds for future reference.

One green world recommended "anna" and "armata?". Have those and a male ordered for next April - we"ll find out if they do well here.
