| We finally made the trip to Seymour to the Mennonite owned store, Byler's. It is pretty small but they carry a lot of bulk foods and I understand they can order bulk for you.
I was interested in bread-making supplies and was delighted to find the Montana Wheat Flours in 5-lb bags so I could try them before taking the grinder, wheat berry plunge. I know it won't be quite the same as fresh ground but will give me some idea. Here is the haul. I hope you can see prices, if not, just ask. I saw the 50 lbs bags of wheat berries on the shelf below.
I had seen on Craig's list someone in Seymour selling raw milk and cream. I cannot buy pure, unadulterated cream and My shorthorn just doesn't keep up with demand! I thought it would make the trip worthwhile to do both. Here is a "it's a small world" story. We got to the dairy we found it is run by a couple who are very much into the whole food concept and she buys bulk foods from Bylers.........and uses the Whisper Mill/Nutri-Mill that we were discussing. She loves it! Grinds flour once a week and keeps what isn't used immediately in the fridge. She also buys her wheat berries and bulk coconut oil and gallon size pure maple syrup there also. They pay $40 for the syrup and he said the coconut oil is way cheaper than the small containers at W-M. They use nothing hydrogenated or partially hydrongenated. They also were the same people I was considering buying a Jersey bull from for my girls! Unfortunately the bull jumped the fence, got in a fight with the neighbor's bull, broke his leg and is now be eaten in the form of hamburger. He did tell me about another one in Ava.
It was a nice trip and took up about 3 hours to and from.
I ended up buying the quart of cream and 1/2 gallon of the richer milk just to see if DH can tell the difference.....I keep thinking about a Jersey cow to go with my Shorthorn..........
Note the dough enhancer. I found a recipe to make my own, but it calls for ascorbic crystals and I haven't found them yet without ordering online so I thought I would give Byler's a try.

Glenda, What great prices! Neat! Do they do orders? I'm trying to see how far they are from my town now... :). Beth |

| Beth, I don't know. The phone numbers are: 800-795-2995 or 417-935-4522. Glad you could see prices; I took several pictures trying to get them to show so you could get an idea about costs. glenda |

| That 2.85 bag of raw sugar REALLY caught my attention first. I used to buy raw sugar for use in my tea and such. And 4.09 for that bag of yeast really seems like a good deal too! AND the flour too! How much is the vanilla? That's the only thing I can't see. Might be too far for me to drive, but I'd love to see a store like that! (147 miles) Maybe we can go sometime this summer. Beth |

| And Beth, don't forget that Seymour is very close to Baker Creek Heirloom seeds. |

| Carol, LOL LOL LOL I have been waiting and waiting for you to say that. Not that you're addicted to Baker Creek or anything like that......and now you have another reason for a road trip! Dawn |

| Dawn, You know me well. I kept thinking someone else would say it first. Not worth another trip just yet because I think the only thing I would buy would be white wheat. I am pretty well stocked......grains, and for sure on seeds. In addition I am in another seed trade and I am waiting for everyone on the forum to stop harvesting so we can do an Oklahoma trade. |

| The vanilla was 8.97 and the SAF yeast was 4.99 which is the same as KA flour but much cheaper than the stores. |

| Yeah, I just checked some of those prices against those on Bulkfoods.com, where I order a lot of my stuff. Bulkfoods' price for a pound of yeast is $6.34. They have several different kinds of sugars so I don't know which to compare. Their rolled oats are $8.35 for 5 pounds and $3.45 for 1 pound. I checked KA's prices and it's $5.95 for two pounds. I can't tell how many pounds are in the bag but it looks like it says .54 per pound so that would come out to five pounds. In that case, $2.70 is a very, very good deal. I want to go there so badly! Plus I have a little genealogy work I could do on the way there or back, in Cabool, MO. But I just don't feel like I can leave the house unattended right now, what with the caliber of friends DGS has made. Last spring, when we went to Marienthal, DGS was at Church camp for the week and we were able to board the dog and lock the house up. He's too old now for church camp, and I feel like these friends of his wouldn't think twice about coming in and raiding our freezer. And maybe worse. Lately he's been putting his friends ahead of us so I just don't feel comfortable about leaving for several days as long as DGS lives here and has a key. Not only would I not trust him to let his friends have full access, but I'd worry every minute that I was gone that he would leave for work with the house left wide open, or leave for work and leave them alone in my house. I wouldn't feel so bad about a day trip, because the risk is less, but going to Bylers would require more than that. |

i hate to admit that at my age, I've never ground my own flour--but we have to go to Spf on the 18th for Hubby's checkup, So think I'll stop in Seymour on the way back. I have a vita-Mix that says you can gring to flour in it--so, I'll try it, and see how everything taste's before I invest in the grinder. Funny, isn't it--I remember my parent's being glad they could get everything ready-made! |

| ceresone, that is what I thought about testing the flour...also they carry the wheat berries so that would be a convenience too. I don't need to make bread yet, but am getting antsy about trying the new flours so may go ahead make it and just put it in the freezer after a test loaf. |

| We buy whole rolled oats from Byler's in 50# bags. We ran out a while back and had to buy from the supermarket in the round cardboard boxes. Yuk! NO comparison to the plump kernals from Byler's. Ditto for their white popcorn. MUCH better than store bought. We also buy flour for our bread machine. We buy 50# bags and store these in plastic 5 gal buckets. Saves money, but QUALITY is the main advantage. Also parboiled rice in 25# boxes. |
