Planting garlic...?

| Yes; my life has been too busy! What are the chances that my garlic will be ok if I plant it THIS WEEK? I did manage to get about 3-4 inches of chopped leaves, plus compost, plus coffee grounds layered on my garden, so maybe it won't be a huge shock...?
Give me the verdict :) |

Shankins, In my opinion you will be fine. I haven't completed planting mine yet. Hope to this week. As the man who has advised me on growing garlic says the last day you can plant in 09 in Dec 31. He is as good an all around gardener as I know. And grows garlic in WI. I would plant it. Then mulch it good and forget it till spring. The idea of planting in the fall is root growth. I had always planted early spring till last year. The roots will grow even if the garlic doesn't come through the mulch. This week is better than next. And we are warmer here than up north so planting late isn't a real problem. He told me about using an axe to plant cloves in WI and raising good garlic. Another reason for planting in the fall is a gardener usually has more time and can. Go for it. Jay |

| Thanks, Jay and Dawn...that was the answer I was hoping for; just wanted to make sure that the roots really did have time to grow since winter seems bent on coming early (and staying, perhaps?). Sharon |

Sharon, In your area and climate mulching might not be necessary but I would. It is good for the soil even if not really needed. And the roots will be fine. I would plant the tops 1 inch deep and mulch them and you'll be fine. Jay |

| Ditto what Jay said. (I'm a groupie of the same garlic guru.) I don't have mine planted yet, either, but did manage to get out there and get the area prepped this week. I hope to get my buns in gear and get them planted before Thanksgiving but I have planted in December and all was fine. Diane |

My mom's dad told her to plant at Christmas and harvest on the first day of summer. I don't ever wait that long, but I always remember that when I'm sticking those cloves in the ground. I just got mine planted this week, and expect they'll be fine, and yours will too. Carol |

| You are all making me feel better. I bought garlic in September for planting and it is still not in the ground. Since I took the heads apart when I shouldn't have, I was a little worried about it getting good roots. I took out the smallest cloves and put them in a plastic bag in the refrigerator to use. Tonight I reached in to get a few and they all have roots. Guess I should of had the ones I plan to plant in the refrigerator also and they could have gotten a head start. |

| Here is a quote from another forum where a person stated what my and Diane's guru said once. And I've always found his advice to be very good. "Martin said once, and I wholly agree; the fall planting is as much a simple way to store garlic "seed" as it is a jump-start on the next year's planting.". And a direct quote by him. Plant the cloves no deeper than 2" above the tip unless you've got almost pure sand. They will grow even if you simply leave a clove laying atop the soil. With a late planting, you won't have to worry much about spring frost damage since there won't be any roots to be damaged. Thus mulching now is more for weed control than protection. That's the main reason that we use it for. I'm using a mix of shredded leaves and shredded straw about an inch thick after rain matted it down. The fields are being covered with straw right now, a month after planting.Martin Jay |

| Last year I planted garlic on Nov 22. The cloves were not in good shape, and they were small. But they took. I got a decent harvest this year. I also planted some real nice, plump garlic cloves, which I picked up in Mexico, in February. I planted them out in the garden on Feb 17. These did really well, perhaps better than the first planting. George Tahlequah, OK |

| I live in the upper part of Oklahoma, wasn't able to get my garlic out in the fall. When is the best time for spring planting? |
