Deformed pears, cause?

mulberryknob

Most of the pears on our tree that bore for the first time this year were severely deformed. (I thought I had a photo, but can't find it.) Anyway, they were knobby, with craters and fissures, some so distorted that the stem end and blossom end were curled to touch each other. Inside the flesh were several gritty, corky spots. They got ripe back in September. What I want to know is, what causes this? We sprayed twice for fireblight, but still had quite a bit of blackened branch tips and leaves. Does fireblight affect the fruit too?
