Snow Is Falling Here This Morning

Okiedawn OK Zone 7

Snow is falling across southern Oklahoma this morning. We have a mixture of large fluffy flakes, and smaller snow pellet type things. Slush is rapidly accumulating on surfaces like the porch steps, driveway, grassy areas, rooftops and car windshields. It is 36 degrees now, expected to go to 43, and no significant accumulation is expected.

We have the same temp and conditions, except no ice pellets yet.

We are way north of you, and it is still dry. The weather hear has no understanding of north and south.

Cloudy and gloomy here all day. No moisture at all that I noticed between 5 A.M. and 8 P.M. Just North of Enid. I can do without the nasty weather.

It looked kinda pretty falling, but it didn't stick around long, for which we are grateful. We just aren't ready for that whole slipping-sliding frozen roadway thing yet.

Larry, I hope you didn't get the ice pellets. We had a stiff north breeze all day and that gave us a really cold wind chill.

Sammy, It is odd how often this fall we've been colder down here than y'all have been up there. I am not a cold weather person so sure hate to see the snow arrive a shade earlier than usual. Normally, we might average 1 or 2 days of snow per winter, but the last couple of years we've had a lot more than that.

Gophermound, I can do without the nasty weather too, but even the cold rain and slushy snowy mess today felt better than any day felt back in July or August.

No snow in Garvin County, but cold and windy. Makes for a quick trip to the mailbox out on the road. Sure hope we aren't going to do 2' of snow on Christmas Eve as a couple of years ago! I was working at the desk of Days Inn in Pauls Valley, and every motel up and down the interstate was full, with shelters being opened up for the overflow. People were coming in cold and hungry, and all the restaurants were closed. All we had was Continental Breakfast supplies, but we did the best we could. Of course, we were all trapped until daybreak, but, even then, our cars were buried in the parking lot. I couldn't get home and up my slick hill for three days. Don't want to do THAT again! That extremely unusual snowstorm, the triple-digit Summer this year and the 5.6 earthquake has made me question if I fell asleep in Oooooookkkkklahoma and awakened in the Twilight Zone!

    Jeanie,

I remember that year well. We had many travelers seeking shelter here too. I believe they even opened up either the school building or a church in Thackerville to offer shelter to folks who didn't want to (or couldn't afford to)pay to stay in one of the casino hotel rooms. So many cars had slid off the road that the tow trucks couldn't tow them all, so the local law enforcement officers were picking up people from their stranded cars and ferrying them to the nearest available shelter. It seems like it took 2 or 3 days to get all those cars out of the medians and ditches and reunited with their people.

I had waited my entire life to have a white Christmas (think we had one when I was 4 or 5 in Fort Worth but don't really remember it) and then, there we were, snowed in at home and going no place at all for any reason whatsoever. I quickly got over that desire to have a White Christmas.

We've already stocked up the pantry with extra people food and the barn with extra animal food so we could be snowed in for days and it wouldn't be an issue, except we might get bored.

We woke up to a dusting of snow and 24 degrees here in Adair Co this morning. With a small electric heater the porch stayed near 50. The greenhouse without any heat and no sun for several days is right above freezing--no ice in the water bucket I left out there. That's ok as everything out there is cold hardy. I picked a mess of lettuce, spinach and bok choy to have a salad for lunch. I sure hope the sun comes back out and pushes the temp in there back to 70. We've already gotten spoiled to wanting to work in the warm as we finish the hot room.

Today though, I think I will clean kitchen cabinets and put down new paper, which isn't nearly as much fun as working outside but I will grit my teeth and do it because it needs to be done.

I am trying to cut a cabinet out of the utility room. We bought another ref/freezer and had to cut a space to put it. We will reinstall something a little smaller.

I still have a good supply of lettuce, kale, turnips, mustard and onions in the garden, but the way the weather looks they may not be there much longer.

We had a little snow yesterday and again today. Never enough to accumulate, but it was pretty.

I have a 5 gallon bucket with a pepper plant in it that doesn't even care that it's 28 degrees outside right now. Every day I go outside expecting it to be done for and it honestly looks better than it looked all summer! It really wants to live, so I guess I should help it out and bring it inside.

Leslie, I have overwintered peppers in pots in our well-insulated but unheated garage, where they have survived down to 18 degrees. Even after dropping leaves on that 18-degree night, the plants almost immediately starting putting out new leaves, and then flowered and set fruit. However, fruit that sets in the garage in winter stays really small and grows incredibly slowly. In years when I overwinter peppers in the garage, I do drag the pots outside on days when temps are above freezing and then back inside at night.

Jeanie, It was 16 here in our valley this a.m. but there was little to no wind, so it felt better than the temps in the low 20s felt yesterday morning. The sun is warming us up quite nicely now.

The frost was really heavy this morning. The salvia farinacea that was in bloom as recently as this past weekend is now frozen. The veronica is still green and about 10 inches tall but not blooming. The Laura Bush petunias are still green and still blooming or, at least, the purple ones are. It seems like the purple ones are a little more cold tolerant than the pink ones.
