have leptotes bicolor,how to care for it

| hello all,last year at an orchid show i bought a very tiny leptotes bicolor .it is in a 1" clay pot with spagnum moss.it was in bloom at the time.since then half the plant died.now it has 6 tiny leaves.how can i properly care for it,do i need to take out of pot,how much lite does it need?right now it is under a 60 w.grow lite for 14 hours a day.i water when the moss feels dry.humidity is 50% most of the time.it hangs out with afr.violets.thank you for any ideas or help. |

| The fact that half of the plant has died suggests it is not very happy. I find this orchid grows best on a plaque. If you can't get tree fern, a piece of bark will do, just tie it on and it will do the rest. You can wrap a very little sphagnum moss around the roots if you like. If it is already used I like to sterilize it first by zapping it in the microwave for 1-2 minutes (depending on the amount). To water, leave it in a bucket of water for a couple of hours once a week. I would think it will need more light than African violets. It is quite happy with a couple of hours a day of direct sunlight, morning and/or evening. Good luck - Ian. |
