Stanhopea jenishiana

My only photo of this blooming and it's just of the last spike!

Although I've had it for years, it's never bloomed before.

And...

I missed getting photos of the actual bloom.

This was just an early sample, from a few weeks ago, to see how they'd come out if taken in here.

The weather was just too bad to take it outside for really good shots and I was busy.

Plus...it's frickin' heavy and moving it takes some doing, so I don't just casually move it around!;~)

So, I kept forgetting until it was too late! :~(

It actually threw out three spikes for a first attempt.

The first one I didn't see until it was going over.

The second and third were wonderful and smelled fantastic, though odd!

I gotta' get my butt in gear and stop missin' so many blooms.

Some, I've never had bloom before and I have no photo record of 'em!

My Stanhopea Lydia Bush is in spike and I really hope to not miss the tiny photo period.

Just curious, how long does a stan stay in bloom?

    About 15 minutes! ;~)

As much a I like 'em, the enjoyment period is sadly short.
Fortunately, I like the lush tropical look of 'em out of bloom.
It also depends upon the humidity and the temps.
At least from what I've experienced anyway.

Generally many weeks of spiking, one day(give or take) of pristine bloom and then it's all down hill.
I've had them last for several days a few times.
This one lasted two days before noticeable overnight wilt.
In a green house, it might last longer, but since mine aren't in one...I don't know.

I have my first seedling plant ordered. I won a gift certificate to Troy Meyers Conservatory and decided since it was a gift I'd try something entirely new. I won't get the plant until the end of the month at the earliest. I'm excited about the chance to grow something new! Your plant is lush and beautiful, how long have you been growing it?

Yeah, whenever I get an update email from Troy Meyers, I go through making a list of what I think I need.

    Hmm...How long?
This one,(I think) I've had five or six years.
It wasn't huge, but wasn't a seedling either.
If I don't neglect it, it grows really fast.
Lots and lots of water when in active growth.
It seems that many of them like to be kept with monsoon type weather.
I'm pretty sure that this is one of those.
The drought period that they suffer through when I bring 'em in for winter starts them spiking.
I water the best that I can, but I have lost growths when I go too long.
I've bought a couple from Nina Rach and talked back and forth a few times.
    Although I'm a species freak...
I always catch myself drooling over Doug Pulley's offerings.
If I could, I'd take one of each of 'em!
But, that's some serious money! ;~)

Mine bloomed in the middle of the summer, I am surprised yours bloomed now, this one needs a dry rest in winter.~Charm

It spends all summer outside being drenched everytime I walk by it.
Even in the summer, nights get very cool.
Winter is spent in a heated room and watering happens whenever I can get around to it.
Some of mine that need a monsoonal climate, seem to do ok.
Although I've lost a couple of spikes through my own fault,
they seem to respond to this fine...mostly! ;~)
I have another Stan in spike right now, as well.
I haven't checked all of 'em, so there could be more of 'em.
I guess that winter and summer are pretty much whenever I say they are! ;~)
