Works real good doesn't' it? I got the idea from Santa Barbara Orchid Estates who commonly grow them this way. I'm sure they did not discover sliced bread but in this area Paul Gripp gets the main credit for this type of growing.

I did that for years and not only does it work, the plants seem to prefer it. In dry environments, the pot-in-pot keeps a sort of moisture barrier between pots which the roots seek. I had better root growth with this method than with just one pot alone.

In Florida, I'm finding that the orchid roots seem to love the bamboo hanger poles which have cut slits to hold the pots. The roots start to grow through the slits to the inside of the holder. It happens quite quickly and I've decided to stop using these as I'd have to tear off too many roots to remove the pot.
