Scaphyglottis purpurea

IÂm not even sure what part of the world this one if from. In any case, kind of a funny story here. IÂve been wondering why this plant never bloomed for me. It seemed happy enough mounted on its hunk of cork.

Well, today when watering I happened to look at the bottom half of the plant and found these tiny, purple things. They were flowers! It probably bloomed before and I just never noticed it since each individual flower is only about 3 mm across. IÂm so conditioned to look at the top half of plants for buds and flowers.

That is TINY. Did some googling and couldn't find purpurea but found violaecea, from north eastern South America.

That's one of the reasons some of us grow orchids..they are so unpredictable! Very cute.
Maybe send it over here so it can keep my tibicinis company.:)

Yes, I love these little guys!

Carol - That is exactly why I grow these things - I love surprises. Now the next time Calvin does one of this plant smuggling operations, have him stop by and I can give you a piece. There are lots of keikis.

Kevin, thanks for your kind offer, but I generally don't do well with mounted ones. Besides, I wouldn't want Calvin to get into more trouble. ;)

Very nice. Glad you eventually found the flowers. This is not Sc.violacea, however. I dont know if they are synonyms. It has been at several shows here recently and the flowers are always dark purple, quite conspicuous, even though v small.
