Phrag besseae ('Pucker' x 'Colossal')

Phragmepedium besseae (besseae 'Pucker' x besseae 'Colosal') is a cross made by the Orchid Zone. The plant comes from the eastern slopes of the Andes of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru and is an intermediate grower. Definitely likes it wet and good quality water.

Used extensively in hybridizing, apparently is a very good parent. You see it crop up everywhere. Multifloral, one after the other. Each flower is backed up by a well developed bud.

One more view. The strong red color is not unusual, anything less would make it a poor quality flower.

Very nice coloration. It looks likes a robust grower also.

A beautiful flower and plant! I live quite near Orchids Ltd., and it's always wonderful to go into their greenhouse and see all of the besseae and besseae hybrids in their vibrant colors. I have not got up the courage to actually try growing one myself, however.
