Stanhopea graveolens

| This is my first Stanhopea and thus, the first one I have bloomed growing in the house. It was given to me by a fellow member in our orchid society since he had other Stans and didn't have the room. It was labeled as S. ecornuta, but now realize that it is in fact S. graveolens. It has spectacular flowers, but boy does it STINK. It smells like super strong moth balls and it literally fills my entire house with fragrance. I have a bunch of windows open trying to air out the place...and that is no exaggeration. Now I know why it is called graveolens meaning the "fragrant stanhopea". Anyway, I grow this in a west window behind venetian blinds as you can see in the pic. Watered every other day when in growth and about every 3-4 days during winter.

| Beautiful. I have only one stan and it refuses to grow! No leaves at all anymore, just psbs. I'm stubborn, won't throw it out until there is no longer aanything green! |

| Wow you must be so proud! I love these but will probably never have the space to grow them |

| Thanks, everyone. Yup, I am a proud parent, Calvin. I was very unsure if I would be able to bloom a Stanhopea growing in the house, especially since my humidity rarely gets above 50% most of the year. I was really worried about bud blast. But, this plant proved to be a real trooper, blooming against all odds...LOL. And, the flowers are going strong, this is the third day they are open. BN |
