Zootrophion vulturipes

Warm to cold grower, only found in Costa Rica. Fairly rare, (maybe) this is the first one I have ever seen in bloom. Saw it on eBay with starting price of $35, it went for over $5o, I passed. It was listed again and I got it for $38 and felt good about it. 3 month later at SBOE, it was one of the plants on the $7.50 table. How is that to make you feel stupid.

Anytime a species is listed on eBay as 'rare, hard to find', beware, your pocketbook is at risk. Anyway it's a flawless white, probably one of the nicer Zootrophions.

Seems to have good work ethics. It's not a big plant, this is it's first bloom and it is going to have 6 flowers.

Nick, thanks for posting this one, it is the sort of orchid that I only see in books.

Yeah! Found the $7.50 plant. It got lost in the shuffle. It's smaller but also in bloom, must be the mating season. At $7.50 each, I bought 3 of the 50 or so SBOE had for sale (since they are 'Rare and hard to find'!!!). 2 are in the warm greenhouse, not in bloom, they must prefer cold which is where the 2 blooming ones are.

That tiny slit you see on one of the flowers is the only opening into the flower. A very small pollinator crawls through there to do the deed.

Wow, very interesting and unusual.
