The two best known Bifrenarias. They are sometimes confused; harrisoniae has a number of color variations but is never purple.Scented.

Even though the flowers on that harrisoniae are more cupped than the other species, I really love the lip on that thing. How strong is the fragrance?

Hey digitalphrag!

I have a Bifrenaria harrisoniae which flowers occasionally. Mine is a tad tempermental.

The species has a pow'rrfull fragrance. It's delightful!

Ian,

Your foto of Bifrenaria tyrianthina is the best! Thanks!!

RE: Bifrenaria

The closest thing I've smelled to a bifrenaria was an intergeneric cross between bifrenaria and a zygopetalum. The zygo parentage dominated the fragrance, so I assumed the strength of it was also dominated by the zygo. Nice to know these things are powerfully fragrant, though. Perhaps at some point I'll give it a try. To me, temperamental is just another word for "I need to give it a try".

Both are beauties, but I love the purple! Is the tyrianthina also fragrant?

Very attractive flowers. I have never grown this species but you have now tempted me. Nice photos too.

Well as I have said before on a number of occasions, scent can be difficult to describe. I think tyrianthina is the better of the two but they are both very nice. Sort of 1930s Chanel, Greta Garbo....;-)
