I show this picture, which is of a friend's plant, because mine refuses to flower. It is now a largish straggly plant, but has never bloomed. Any tips ?
Michoice -- Depends on your definition of small growing. This plant is sometimes commonly referred to as the bamboo orchid (a name which is also applied to other genera and species). Anyway, mature growths are between 2 and 3 feet tall, and it spreads via pups very quickly to fill whatever pot you have it in.
I'd be interested in hearing any suggestions on getting these guys to bloom. I grow mine outdoors from April to October in nearly full sun. This time of year when temperatures fluctuate, I keep it outside, and bring it in on cold nights. I water frequently, and feed heavily when it is actively growing. It's in a large pot with a terrestrial orchid mix.
However, in the 10 years I've had this plant, it has only bloomed 4 times. I intentionally baked it in the sun this year and I've been fertilizing a little more often. So, I really hope I get to see (and most especially smell) those wonderful blooms.
Sounds like you are doing everything right. My guess would have been to bake it. I was also going to suggest feeding it heavily, but you did that. How about cutting back on the feeding? Maybe you are getting green growth instead of flowers.
I bought 2 babys at wally's garden center in Honolulu this October. I recommend Wally's if you are on Oahu. They said that I would be pleasantly supprissed when they bloomed. I am happy to see what the flowers will look like and to get some tips on growing.
