Ok, so I searched it and found the answer to my question. I am not using any recipe, just have the water mixture as is. Have been watering my jalapenos with it and now am understanding why they are doing rather well.

If it has any nutrient value, bacteria will quickly multiply and turn it into a stinking, slimy mess. Make it and use it promptly.

Current research indicates that teas made without some method of aeration can become anaerobic and grow disease pathogens. While many once thought that "organic" products had to smell bad to be any good, most of us know that is not true today.

No need to "waste" alfalfa tea. If you make it in small amounts you can use it quickly enough that you won't have it around for long.

What I do is put a couple of cups of alfalfa pellets in a bucket and fill 1/2 full of water. The next day the pellets will have softened and I blast water into the bucket with the hose to mix and introduce oxygen. Then I dip out enough to turn the water in my watering can light green (like green tea) and use to water plants. Each day I blast more water and oxygen in and take out more to dilute and water plants. When the tea in the bucket is no longer concentrated and is light green and has spent alfalfa residue I just use it all and spread the residue around my plants.

I have a large garden so rotate watering with alfalfa tea. With a small garden you could just use less alfalfa and use it up quickly.

There are many recipes for alfalfa tea on the 'net which state the foul smell is necessary. However I don't like noxious smells and believe it's not necessary for alfalfa tea to become anaerobic, which is what that bad smell indicates. My alfalfa tea smells pleasantly fermented after a few days but IMO it's beneficial even before it ferments. In fact I also just scatter pellets around plants and they break down when watered. Kind of slow-release fertilizer.
