I agree we do tend to want to complicate things :-)

You've pretty much hit the basics, but I'd add that a careful preparation of the seed base is going to get you an excellent start to begin with and is often the most overlooked aspect of lawn care.

And get a mulching mower - one of the best things you can do for your lawn. Mow often and high and water infrequently but deeply.

FWIW, I've not fertilized my lawn in years - there really isn't any need with a mulching mower.
