I used sweet feed on my lawn with no problems. If you plan to add it the day before it rains, you can ensure nothing will mess with it. Once the rain gets to it, it quickly softens and becomes mushy.

This is quite often a concern with people new to organic materials. I've been doing it since 2001 and the only critters that seem to be attracted are birds. Frankly, the birds might have come anyway, but if the organics attracts them, that's fine with me. They are probably eating insects and they are certainly depositing fertilizer.
