Alfalfa Pellet Questions

Hello,

I'm trying to feed my soil and currently spreading a thin layer of compost over the lawn. When is the best time to put down the pellets? Or would I be best to make a tea with them (have never done either). I'm zone 5, Portland Maine. Day temps are still in mid 50's, overnights are low 30's. Also, I live near a Tractor Supply Store. Their site lists:

Standlee Premium Alfalfa Pellets - 40# at $14.99
Standlee Premium Alfalfa/Timothy Pellets - #40 at $14.99 (availability seems more limited)

what's the difference, which one should I be using and is that a good price? Thank you very much.

Timothy, like Alfalfa, is a grass used to feed animals. Like Alfalfa is does have some food value so which of those feeds to use depends on what the soil you have needs.
The best time to feed a lawn is when it is actively growing because that is when the Soil Food Web is active and can convert that material into something the growing grass can utilize. A spray might work a bit faster but liquids do not have the solids the Soil Food Web needs to live and function.
