What grass for North Texas

I live in North Texas, just north of Dallas/Ft. Worth. Starting over with lawn on an acre. Probably 12-15k lawn with pretty much full sun. Can't afford to water much, so St. Augustine is out. Also, do not want a short lawn (~1"). Will common bermuda tolerate being maintained in the 2-4" range? If not, what are some other recommendations? Thanks.

St Augustine requires less water than bermuda. The difference is bermuda will go dormant when it does not get enough. St Augustine will die. I think bermuda will do a lot better cut shorter than 2" to 4". You might want to look at centipede for lower water requirements.

Look into buffalo varieties. One I like, which is expensive to buy, but very inexpensive to maintain, is called Tech Turf buy the Turffalo company out of Abernathy, TX (North of Lubbock). It spreads like crazy and can be mowed at any height or unmowed. Being a buffalo it looks better with water but will easily survive no water.
