Not exactly a lawn question, but since this is the forum I know and trust, here's the situation (apoligies for double posting to lawn forum as well)

I use leaf mulch extensively in my flower beds along the property borders. However, along the house, I have a holly bush (probably not an official holly - but similar prickly leaves) with no mulch underneath (but branches to the ground), and another area w/ azaleas, w/ remnants of wood and pine nugget mulch from several years ago.

Aside from obviously not piling up the mulch against the base of the house (brick), should I be aware of any issues of using leaf mulch vs. traditional wood mulch vs. pine nuggets? Is there a minimum distance? I've been hesitant to add a fresh layer for fear of attracting unwanted guests in the house proper.
