Help with lawn

I fertilized with Jonathan Green at Memorial Day and used corn gluten a few weeks prior. The lawn greened up nicely and weeds were not too bad!! But then we've had large amounts of rain since then and now getting terrible amounts of brown patches. A roaming "Chem Lawn" rep stopped and said it was "red thread" from too much nitrogen in the soil and that I should sign up with them and fertilize again. I declined of course, but what do I do now??? The lawn is starting to look terrible. We have new sod from last year in the back of the house and it looks just fine. The trouble is in the front of the house that gets a lot of sun all day. The new sod has much more shade. Help ! I will attach pictures if I can figure out how....Thanks.
