In order to answer your question, we would have to know your location and type of lawn. If it is a northern lawn, ie. Kentucky blue grass / fescue / rye grasses, then you could go ahead and fertilize with soy bean meal. Congratulations on your decision to go "Organic" with your lawn. Personally (and I tend to be a hyper-perfectionist), I'd wait until at least eight weeks after your last synthetic fertilization to switch to organic. That's mostly to make sure that the nitrogen has been used up and not for any particular organic reason.

If it's been at least "a while," you should be just fine. :-)

You can fertilize with organic fertilizer during the hot months. It is not a matter of getting fertilizer "burn" like you might with a chemical fertilizer, but, for cool season grasses like yours, its probably better not to. They often are trying to go dormant and spurring top growth is counterproductive long term.

Most studies I've seen suggest three apps of fertilizer in the fall, one in early summer and none in the hot months.

FWIW, the frequent app of fertilizer to cool season grasses in the summer is probably an artifact of chem companies marketing campaigns more than anything else. Warm season grasses need monthly apps during the hot months.

I usually go from May to September without fertilizing my cool season grasses.

Don't let marketing make you feel compelled to fertilize in the hot months.
