What kind of soil was this sod layed on?
How much humus (residual organic matter) is in that soil?
How well does that soil drain?
How well does that soil retain moisture?
What kind of life is in that soil?
What does the soil smell like?
How high is that grass cut?
How often is the grass watered?
Some thatch is necessary for a good healthy lawn, but most landscapers, I have found, think any thatch is bad and will rip it out at the drop of a hat.

Kimmsr, I wish I had all those answers for you. My conversation with my brother about his lawn was about this deep: "Man, your lawn looks like crap." "I know."

I was hoping the photos would illustrate a classic case of something, like mowing too short or watering every day or a nitrogen deficiency. I'll try and get more info out of him, but just suggesting he raise the height of his mower deck made his eyes glaze over, so wish me luck.
