How do you use a seed mat?

OK,

This may be a dumb question, but how do you use a seed mat. I purchased some Pennington seed mat to use in a shade patch of the ground where I have been trying to regrow grass. I rack the area, covered it with compost. Apply seed and then cover with mat and stake it (actually I use kebab from my BBQ, but hey it works!).

I have pretty much tried to keep the mat moist. Some blades have poke through, but how long do I leave the mat in place? Am i suppose to leave it and let it decompost to nothing?

What kind of grass did you seed. Pennington is a brand of grass seed and can be anything from Blue Grass to annual ryegrass. Annual ryegrass is often included in some grass seed mixes because it germinates in about 6 days while the many more desireable grasses can take 6 to 8 weeks to start to germinate. Patience is necessary when seeding a lawn

Actually I did not purchase any Pennington seeds at all. Pennington sells a seed mat which I have placed over the grass seeds. The grass has started to grow under and through the mat, so I was wondering what I do next.

The guy at the store said I should leave it in place and the mat will just decompose.
