CGM used as a pre-em should applied at 20lbs/1,000 sq ft. There are 43,560 sq ft in an acre. 20 x 43.56 = 871.2 lbs. If you purchase the CGM in 50 lb bags, 871.2 / 50 = 17.424 bags.

Regarding the application date, in the North we use September 15 or when the soil temperature reaches 70F. Maybe someone with experience in the South can answer your question.
