Planting Clover Stolons (or Any Stolons Really)

CPTK

Has anyone ever tried to transplant clover or a stoloniferous grass by stolon? My clover sent a bunch of stolons onto my patio, which created a great opportunity to harvest them and plant them in a bare area in the lawn. How successful would this be?

Right now it has probably gotten too cold, but I'm just bringing up the subject in general. I imagine for it to work you would need to keep the ground even more moist than you would for seeds. Would the stolons need leaves with access to the sun to create sugars to root, or would sugars stored in the stolons be sufficient? Should the stolons be buried a 1/4 inch or so in the soil, or just pressed into the top? Can I cut up the stolons so that each only contains one node or would they dry out too easily? Is it necessary to use rooting hormone (I would guess not since rooting comes very naturally to a stolon)?
