you don't have rocks under these areas in you lawn. Maybe what you should do is poke a object into these areas. Might be worth a try. When rocks are under the grass it will also make brown patches in your lawn.

    my lawn rests on crushed limestone and i haven;t had problems so far since july 2005....

    Yes, I have a lot of rocks, especially in the sloped areas. See the IBDU forum for my explanation. Your point is well taken, but I'm not sure if this is the direct cause being that most of the area (probably 80% contains rocks. My sprinkler guy can fedge for that!!!
