For me it seems hanging baskets and planters have to be watered more often than plants in the ground. They dry out very quickly in the summer. They do make self-watering planters that hold a resevoir of water. I don't have any experience with those but there's lots of info on them in the Container Forum. Maybe someone here can remember if they've seen any for sale locally. I wouldn't mind having a couple myself. I'm here every day to water but get a little tired of that chore. There's also a Midwest Forum where you might find some St. Louis area gardeners.

One of the most drought tolerant plants is sedum and there are many different types. Some grow upright and some are more like ground covers and would hang over the edge of a container. They have succulent leaves and bloom but not as long as an annual would.

You must be anxious to move into your new house. That will be nice to come home to.
