What a great idea Burpee has. I hope lots of people take advantage of it. When I first began gardening my little plot was maybe 20x20 and I canned 40 quarts of tomatoes and juice and froze 40 quarts of pole beans. I didn't do corn until I dug up another plot behind the garage. I always encourage new gardeners to start very small so they can take care of it and not get discouraged by the weeds and work. Then, slowly expand once you learn more.

I think if more people would do a tomato or two and spring greens and onions and a couple of tepees of pole beans...just enough for some fresh eating, they would be hooked for life!

It doesn't take much space to raise a few veggies. My daughter has a very small back yard, half cement and quite shady. Last year she and I dug up a strip 2X20 feet next to the fence. We planted lettuce, radishes, carrots, spinach in the front row and pole beans, tomatoes, nasturtiums--for color AND to eat--snappeas and cucumbers along the back. The cucs unfortunately didn't get enough sun to make but she picked some of all the other stuff. She runs a daycare in her home and wanted her young charges to see food growing as most of them never had.
